• Droites perpendiculaires

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its way to the top of the box office over the weekend. The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers. Malegaon, in western India, has a thriving budget film industry The bright lights of the British capital are a world away from Malegaon, a down-at-heel textile town in the backwaters of Maharashtra state in western India. But the two have come together at this year's London Film Festival, where the remarkable story of Malegaon's unlikely film industry success has had its European premiere. "Superboys of Malegaon", by director and producer Reema Kagti, follows the true story of Shaikh Nasir and his friends and their no-budget parodies of Bollywood and Hollywood classics such as "Sholay" and "Superman". With DIY filmmaking techniques, amateur actors and the unique flavour of local dialect and comedy, his works became instant local hits. They then gained international recognition with the release of a 2008 documentary of their work, "Supermen of Malegaon". Malegaon's links to the giant Hindi-language film industry, though, are not so distant. By a twist of fate, co-producer Zoya Akhtar's father Javed Akhtar wrote "Sholay", which inspired Nasir's passion for filmmaking. "It's a very, very big story from a very small town in India", Akhtar told AFP in an interview. "It tells you how connected you are, especially with cinema." "Nasir's influences and my influences are very similar", added Kagti. "So it was really like a privilege to be able to give a hat tip to so many people, so many actors, so much of the Indian film industry." - 'Dream factory' - "Superboys" is an ode to the determination of Nasir, played by Adarsh Gourav, who featured in the Oscar-nominated film adaptation of Aravind Adiga's 2008 Booker Prize-winning novel "The White Tiger". In Malegaon, some 300 kilometres (185 miles) from India's entertainment capital Mumbai, video parlours -- small picture houses -- are a haven for labourers keen to escape the daily slog of industrial weaving looms. Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar's new film 'Superboys of Malegaon' charts the industry's success Nasir's films offer comedic respite and a chance to see their town portrayed on the big screen, said Kagti. "Every person who was part of that film has been immortalised and has been made into a hero of sorts, and it's given them a reason to not just exist but to celebrate life," added Gourav. With no budget and little experience beyond his love for films and gigs as a wedding videographer, Nasir has to improvise and use homespun techniques to make movies. While filming the Superman spoof, the hero dresses in comical red shorts with drawstrings dangling out, flying with the help of wacky green-screen contraptions while Nasir films tracking shots by balancing on the back of a truck hurtling down a bumpy road. - Global audience - "Superboys" touches upon everything from poverty to love, never straying far from Nasir's unwavering belief in the power of a camera -- and some imagination -- to turn the mundane into something extraordinary. "The story is so universal that we feel there is a global audience," said executive producer Ritesh Sidhwani. 'Mollywood' films are made on a shoestring budget and often spoof Bollywood or Hollywood classics The film has already been shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and with its screening in London, Sidhwani hopes it will attract audiences beyond the Indian diaspora. Nasir's homemade local films succeeded in creating a place in India's sometimes impenetrable film industry for Malegaon. Akhtar said it is a lesson for everyone, particularly in a world of smartphones, where everyone can be a film-maker. "People who watch this film will realise that they don't need to wait for a big break... They can just take that step," she added. Today, "Mollywood" as it is sometimes called, lives on, with some actors from the original films continuing in Nasir's footsteps, sharing their DIY creations on platforms such as YouTube. "That industry is now a part of Indian cinema's history", said Akhtar. In "Superboys", the writer of the spoofs, Farogh, tells Nasir: "You told our stories, in our own voices... You gave us dreamers a place in history." "In the history of Indian cinema, you've added a page for Malegaon."

The bold, confident, free-thinking modern woman who may soon occupy the White House is not named Kamala Harris. In her new No.1 New York Times best-selling memoir, Melania Trump shares a revealing look into her personal life and journey - from a childhood in small-town Slovenia, to globetrotting pursuits as a young model, to her courtship and marriage to one of the world's most famous men. She also corrects the record, challenges her critics and clarifies her positions on a range of issues from abortion (she's pro-choice) to the inclusion of biological men in women's sports (female athletes must always be 'protected and respected'). In fact, she sounds like many female voters grappling with the whiplash changes wrought by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's time in the White House. The bold, confident, free-thinking modern woman who may soon occupy the White House is not named Kamala Harris. (Pictured: Kellyanne with Donald and Melania Trump at the White House in 2019). 'The country is suffering,' she writes. 'We have wars around the world... The border is open and dangerous… a lot of fentanyl is coming over and killing our youth…. The economy is really not great, inflation is high.' I've known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and regard her as a friend. She has been unfairly maligned and the target of so much speculation and prevarication. That is why it has been so wonderful to see her own 'October Surprise', a memoir in her own words on her own timeline, showing the measured, magnanimous woman tens of millions of Americans adore. Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just weeks apart. Even as she navigated her loss in public view, Melania made every effort to be there for me. She and President Trump called, sent flowers, handwritten notes and checked in with me time and again. After my divorce was finalized last year, Melania showed up again, supporting me as any caring friend would and encouraging me to swing open soldered doors following a time of personal upheaval and transition. Read More EXCLUSIVE KELLYANNE CONWAY: Don's back! Here's his new 2024 blueprint And it was the same story when we worked together in the White House. While Jill Biden has insisted on being called 'Doctor', Melania was admired and beloved by the political and permanent staffers alike, asking after their children by name, welcoming them to events big and small, and treating them with inclusivity and respect. Known as a protective and present mother, Melania now uses her memoir to call out the 'sheer malice' of unfunny comic Rosie O'Donnell who, in 2016, tweeted despicable and totally unfounded claims about Barron, then aged 10. It was just weeks after Trump had stunned the world and won, and the same liberal media and Hollywood types, who perpetuated every vicious attack against him, reveled as O'Donnell's vile lie wormed its way across social media. It was a shock to see such naked cruelty towards a First Child, especially when so many of us had treated Chelsea Clinton and the Obama daughters like Fabergé eggs. Kids (including mine) should always be off limits. I've known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and regard her as a friend. (Pictured together in 2018 visiting Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center). Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just weeks apart. Even as she navigated her loss in public view, Melania made every effort to be there for me. She and President Trump called, sent flowers, handwritten notes and checked in with me time and again. (Pictured: Together with Trump in the White House in 2019). But instead of going to war, Melania acted swiftly and tenderly to shield her son. She channeled maternal outrage into a first lady's focus on initiatives centered around children's wellness and cyberbullying awareness. Her 'Be Best' campaign remains a highlight of her time in office. Melania has never been one for preening and posturing. Other first ladies used their roles to land on the cover of fashion magazines, but she did so on her own, years before, as a successful model. Even when I've suggested she push back on myriad false claims made by the media or ungrateful former staffers who have returned her trust in them with self-serving lies and revisionist history, she has declined, knowing that her silence is always more powerful. Behind closed doors, Trump has, for decades, regarded his wife as a top confidante and counselor. Whether as an international business mogul, a TV star or, lately, leader of the free world, it is Melania's opinion that he has consistently sought. Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range of advice, but he speaks of - and to - Melania in an entirely unique way. Really, he fears yet reveres her. He respects her independence, seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people. I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it is one fundamentally built on mutual love and respect. Recently, as Barron was heading off for college and Melania was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly asked Trump how it might feel to be the second most popular man and the second most prominent author in the household. He chuckled and relented. Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove. She is not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras on matters that are best handled privately, or loudly offering insights or slights about her husband's political opponents à la Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying to control - looking at you, Jill Biden - nor controlled by her partner. She is what many feminists insist they are: independent, a product of her own choices, comfortable in her own skin. She has been by Trump's side the entire time. Though never in his shadow. In fact, from that very first moment they descended the golden escalator, she's been leading the way.

Hamas' leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.  Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.  Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar's 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a 'moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.' 'A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,' he told the Telegraph.  At the time of Sinwar's death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.  Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.  Sinwar (pictured) died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader Protesters attend a demonstration against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and demand a deal to release all hostages held in Gaza, during the Israel-Hamas conflict, near Netanyahu's private residence in Jerusalem June 20 People protest against the government, to demand a ceasefire deal and the immediate release of hostages kidnapped during the deadly October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, in Tel Aviv, Israel A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday, several days after Sinwar's passing: 'There are currently no serious cease-fire talks, and Blinken is fully aware of this.' Read More Child among four killed and dozens injured after IDF airstrike near Lebanon's biggest hospital They added: 'It's unclear how Sinwar's death will impact any potential negotiations, if they even exist at this stage.' While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn't possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them.  He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.  Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were 'cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we got to them.' The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.   Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage. Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured. The time on the clock by the end of the footage is 1.32am, just five hours before the first terrorists were spotted breaching into Israeli territory This is the moment Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar's wife is spotted seemingly holding a $32,000 bag in the tunnel leading to his secret lair Footage of his wife seems to show her entering the tunnel to the lair, carrying a Birkin bag, the day before the horrendous tragedy. She is seen appearing to smile at the camera People pass by a newly painted graffiti depicting Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar, days after he was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024 Goldberg-Polin lost his arm when a grenade exploded during the carnage. 'We saw the six hostages killed when Israel was entering the tunnel. That could be the case now. We just don't know,' Baskin said.  Read More US probing 'leaked Israeli documents' which 'indicate Britain's involvement in a deadly plot'  He said the return of the hostages depended entirely on whether Israel is able to make a deal with Hamas.  'It's a moment of opportunity where Israel should be issuing a very clear call that anyone who's holding a hostage that releases them will be given free passage for themselves and their family out of Gaza to another country, as well as a lot of money. 'In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should also be reaching out to Egypt and Qatar and tell them to renew the negotiations quickly, not on the deal that's been negotiated without success for almost four months, but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously require Israel to end the war.' He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for many Israelis who believe that their release would simply lead to another October 7-style attack in the future.  A Yemeni man looks at an artwork depicting the Hamas' Political Bureau Head Yahya Sinwar Sinwar's lair, discovered by Israeli soldiers in the Tel al-Sultan area, was well-resourced, with food, water and other supplies to help him survive for months underground These are the disquieting images that show Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was callously hiding out in relative comfort from his underground lair as he ordered his terror group to carry out the bloodiest massacre Israel has ever endured  But Baskin said it was a mistake to think like this: 'October 7 wasn't because of Sinwar. [It] was because we're occupying another people for 56 years without enabling them to ever believe that they're going to be free, or locking two million people in Gaza under poverty and telling them that they'll never be able to leave Gaza.' Read More Hamas 'will keep new leader's identity SECRET to avoid another assassination' He said he hoped the deadly attack would ultimately force Israelis to 'confront the fallacy of basing its policies, vis-à-vis the Palestinians, on military force'. 'For Palestinians, the lessons learned must, first and foremost, be that there should no longer be an armed struggle as part of their liberation strategy. 'Right or wrong, the armed struggle primarily brings death and destruction.' He added: 'Every person living between the river and the sea must have the same right to the same rights. 'From that principle, we can move forward. Freedom, self-determination, security, and dignity for all.' HamasIsrael

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers 'incredible' deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics. The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country. Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to provide support and assistance to people in need. Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations. Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.  Shoppers will find men's, women's, and children's clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.  Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers, and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.  There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas - or until stock runs out.  Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers 'incredible' deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey's on 7 November.  The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season - but it will also include household items, Bric-à-brac, and electrical items. Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up locations online. 'They have all the trending products - it's so awesome,' one said. 'I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I'm obsessed with it,' another wrote. 'I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,' a woman added. For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered a 'hidden gem' discount retailer where you can find designer buys from brands like Fendi, Dior, and Aje for affordable prices. TK Maxx - which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia - is the answer to buying new clothes and shoes on a budget. TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons - and shoppers have described it as a 'clearance treasure hunt'. Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale. Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses. Beth said, 'I was truly blown away - so if you're looking for a bargain, head there.' Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves? In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support. The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election - actually less than the major parties currently spend. The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place. So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes - and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited. The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made. At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made - but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost. In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy. Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were 'running scared' with the policy and warned the reform would 'not stop the rot'  Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot - saying if it serves only the major parties 'it's a rort, not reform'. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: 'What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up' Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped. Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a 'stitch-up', 'outrageous' and 'a rort, not a reform'.  They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor's proposal just might secure the support of the opposition. I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column. Because I had assumed - incorrectly - that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability. More fool me. The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers. It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue. Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured) The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.  And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules. Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations. The Labor government isn't even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way. It won't be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out. They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them. Don't get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb. As they should - because it certainly isn't beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come. But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for. They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package. To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to 'clean things up'.

Dressing up for Thanksgiving can be tricky because you want to strike a balance of style, comfort and practicality. The day often involves a mix of eating, lounging, socializing, and possibly outdoor activities so finding an outfit that's both chic and cozy can be challenging. Plus, with all the eating, your look needs to be forgiving at the waist but formal enough for all the pics! Daily Mail reveals the best colors, silhouettes, and shoes for every kind of celebration. Dressing up for Thanksgiving can be tricky because you want to strike a balance of style, comfort and practicality SPIRITED COLORS  Warm, earthy tones that mimic fall foliage are the best colors to wear on Turkey Day. While black may seem like a logical choice for eating a large meal, festive tones like burnt orange, mustard yellow, forest green, browns and burgundy are a beautiful alternative for the season. Burnt orange: Evokes feelings of comfort and warmth, and is associated with foliage, fireplaces, and pumpkins. Mustard yellow: Captures the essence of the season by resembling the color of changing leaves. Forest green: Associated with nature, it aligns with the theme of the holiday. Browns: Perceived as warm and inviting, brown shades like chocolate, caramel and camel, are perfect for a family gathering. Burgundy:  This year's hottest color, burgundy lends an air of sophistication. Cream: Natural yet elegant, the neutral creates balance. Gold: Adds a luxurious touch to any look.  Layering these color with textured fabrics, like knits or suede and a touch of silk, can create a stylish, seasonally appropriate look.  Shades that represent fallen leaves lend a rich, cozy feel and festive tone Bryce Dallas Howard attended the Prime Video Presents "Trailblazers" Showcase at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England looking seasonally appropriate Bryce Dallas Howard attended the Prime Video Presents "Trailblazers" Showcase at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England looking seasonally appropriate. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme -- abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump. In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums. And in this key southwestern state -- where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes -- every ballot truly will count. In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution -- and, while they're at it, to vote for Vice President Harris. To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to "a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created." She added, "Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women's health care and protect our democracy and protect all people." Une pancarte barrée du slogan "L'indifférence aux élections est dangereuse", à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024 Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited. Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them. "Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need," she told AFP. - 'Abortion is murder' - As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights. Donald Trump lors d'un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024 "It's important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same," Ireland said. But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters. "I do think that abortion is murder," said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student. "There are cases of incest or rape" that merit exceptions, he conceded, "but that's very small." He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration. "People that are entering the United States illegally... should be sent back to where they came from," he said. "My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way." So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally -- powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government. "I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they're really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They're not really able to do anything," Lopez said. - Mixed impact - The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote -- on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns. Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18, 2024 But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope. Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead. Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass. So the abortion issue may not be "helping Democrats in the way that they would hope," said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University. Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said. Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes "a broad spectrum of views on the topic," an issue that also raises conservatives' concerns about "government interference," she added. The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also "moderates and even many Democrats," said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator. The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris's recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months. The vice president, Kavanagh said, is "running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol."

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman's Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from the airline.  Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia's 'most exclusive club' the Chairman's Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair. This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters.  If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking 'any kind of benefit'  Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman's Lounge membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.  Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023. NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton declared his Chairman's Lounge membership in 2023 Read More Inside the exclusive hideaway for the nation's movers and shakers, where secret deals can be done   An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners and CEO are members of the Chairman's lounge. 'This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,' the spokesman said. 'Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to Chairman's lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register. 'Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission's jurisdiction.' Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the NACC over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman's Lounge memberships received from Qantas.  An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman's Lounges was offered by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one at Canberra Airport. The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they were seeking 'a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and professional Front of House team'. 'This role is based within the Chairman's Lounge, a small fine dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed by Neil Perry Consulting,' the ad states.  'Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers' expectations.' The Qantas Chairman's Lounge (pictured Sydney Airport) has been described as Australia's most exclusive club Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the other around his partner Jodie Haydon A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman's Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty Applicants must 'have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster. The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman's Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.  Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family. According to unnamed Qantas 'insiders' 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were 'privately funded' and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a 'plus one' Chairman's Lounge membership Mr Albanese's partner Jodie Haydon did as well.  Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were 'declared in the appropriate way'. WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN'S CLUB? The Qantas Chairman's Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret. It has been dubbed ¿the most exclusive club in the country¿ and comes with a distinct black card. Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities. The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where to look. Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.  Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gift Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines. Members may bring in two guests at a time.  Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board and your personal preferences are logged for each flight. Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines. Soure: Executive Traveller       Anthony AlbaneseQantas

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.  Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia's first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway. The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth's Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August. They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.  'We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,' Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.  'I'm quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.' The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway. They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property. Paul Holmes a Court (pictured) is the son of Australia's first billionaire, famed tycoon Robert Holmes a Court, who died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 53 Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council battle to remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from the driveway of their $20million mansion Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree's odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace. After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a 'good outcome'. 'I think it meets both the owners' wants, or expectation, but also matches the council's needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that property,' he said. Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval. Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would 'take a common sense approach' to the issue. 'This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government. I've always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,' Mr Carey told the West Australian.  'And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.' According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion - which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River - the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.  The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904 in Federation 'Arts and Crafts' style The home boast an unparalleled view of the Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay 'Designed in the rare Federation 'Arts and Crafts' style, the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, charming decorative arches, casement-style sash windows, and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting river views beyond,' the listing said. The property also features 'Plush Champagne-hued carpets' and 'cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars, abundant storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower bathroom and climate-controlled wine cellar.' Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court, who once jointly owned of the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe, and climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court.
